Last weeks commute drawings

There is no commute drawing for last sunday because I had a day off to celebrate my grandma’s 86th birthday.

Monday: A pretty dress imaginary polaroid. Inspired by the beautiful dress @ssuuuss had on for her brothers wedding, as seen on her instagram. 🙂

Tuesday: I did not finish tuesdays drawing during my commute, so I posted a work in progress and completed her on the way back home. I love dance.

Wednesday: If you’re wondering if I made a commute drawing today, I sort of did. I was practicing working in Paper on my iPad with my new sensu brush. But I didn’t have enough time (for the majority of my commute I was still eating breakfast) to make anything I want to share. Maybe later!
I got a new sensu brush after losing the one I had somewhere. Fortunately there are several Dutch webshops that offer them now so I don’t have to order from the US and pay an absurd amount of shipping costs (fuck you ThinkGeek) and extra tax costs (Ugh) like with my last one. I’ve now finished the drawing I made, but I don’t think it’s all that good. Still, showing my progress is a good thing! And playing around with different ways of drawing in Paper and seeing how I can best use that app is interesting.

A practice drawing with my new sensu brush (I lost the old one). I'm trying out different ways of drawing in Paper by 53 on my iPad. I see a lot of problems with this drawing, but I did enjoy making it!

Thursday: It took me a while to settle on a subject. Lots of ideas, but none felt like something I wanted to draw. Until I figured I could combine a hunan form with a tree. Presto: Dryad!

Trying out some of the new sketchbooks! I think I will keep using the Daler Rowney for my commute drawings.

Sunday: A new imaginary polaroid! The sunny weather makes me want to sit in the park. This is the first page I did in the new Daler Rowney sketchbook that I got this weekend. The paper picks up pencil like crazy, it’s great! My H2 graphite pencil is a lot darker here then I am used to, but that’s okay. And a little bit of water colour pencil goes a long way here. I’m excited to get to know this paper better.

Monday: Yoda! I wanted to see how the thin clairefontaine sketchbook took to my aqua markers. Not that well, it’s too much water. So I stopped adding wrinkles (Yoda should have more) to keep him from getting too messed up.

Tuesday: Imaginary polaroid of an umbrella. I posted this late tuesday night because I had forgotten my iPad so I couldn’t share it from the road.

Wednesday I didn’t make a commute drawing because I was finishing watching an episode of The Wire in the train. (yay for iPads!)

Thursday: Apple imaginary polaroid. Todays #commutedrawing might be a poison apple, but it sure it pretty.

So yeah. I was all super active and posting three times a week and then suddenly I stopped. I stopped making and sharing commute drawings. I stopped posting here even though I did have things to share. But I guess I just needed some time for myself, and switching sketchbooks had a much bigger effect than I imagined.

Because I really didn’t like the new sketchbook I got. And it made me sad and not want to draw. I tried it for a couple of drawings, but I was just getting too frustrated with the paper. And for a while I didn’t have time to look for a new sketchbook with different paper so I just… stagnated.

April 14: First commute drawing in my new sketchbook, I definitely have to get used to the paper! I’m not sure I’m happy with it…

April 16: Todays drawing is not an imaginary polaroid. I wanted to try something on a larger scale to see how I like the paper then. Still not a fan. As you can see I’ve been playing Animal Crossing again on my Nintendo 3DS. Yesterday I didn’t do a commute drawing because I was really tired. Sleep is important!

April 17: I figured I’d try an exercise in just watercolour pencils for todays #commutedrawing. Maybe I like the paper better if I don’t use graphite? I don’t, the paper can’t take the water and starts dissolving a bit. 😦 It was not at all like this when I got to test it in the store…

The paper really wasn’t what I need from a sketchbook, I couldn’t work in detail with my graphite pencil and it did not respond well to the water (of which I don’t even use all that much). I hated it. And before I knew it three weeks passed and I lost all drive to keep drawing and to keep posting here. Which is a shame, because I do have photos to share and other stories to tell.

But now I’m getting back on track!
