Busy busy summer

You would not believe how busy I have been this summer. How busy I still am. My time is mostly filled with fun and interesting stuff, but it does lead to less blogging then I would have liked. Anywhoo, here’s to more updates again. 🙂

Fun news, my stepbrother is getting married this weekend, and I have dyed my hair again in celebration:

I am very excited for the wedding, so I felt I needed an explosion of colour to signify that. I’m not going to re-bleach my roots, I like that my natural colour is coming out again. I still have more than enough bleached hairs that I can colour and re-colour in all of the pastels and extreme tints.

I made a communte drawing again! In a facebook conversation that turned to who of us would be which avenger I said I was the Hulk, and a friend of mine said someone else had already claimed that role. I responded thusly:

Me: WE CAN HAVE MORE THAN ONE HULK, YOU HULK-BIGOT

Me: ARMY OF HULKS

Me: HULK AND THE HULKETTES

Me: Whoop lost my cool there for a moment.

Sometimes I do things just to amuse myself. I think I myself laughed the hardest. In the train I then drew this:

Eefje-Hulk! I still need to learn how to do patterned clothing better, so that’s a thing I want to improve. I enjoyed drawing in the train again. I’ve lately been knitting and crocheting and sometimes reading, and my commute is not endless. (Thank God.)
But I will start drawing again now.

I’m also thinking about resurrecting the I found a bookmark project, since I did really enjoy it even though I was sad all the bookmarks went missing and that I didn’t get much response. I’m thinking of changing the workflow a little though. I have such a large to read pile at home that adding library books to that would not be smart. So I will just check which of the books I’m going to read are also in the library and put the bookmark in there. And perhaps start with making a couple of bookmarks for books I’ve recently read, so that I can start with a bang and not have the readers of the blog (few though they might be) having to wait ages between posts.

In which we discuss my current creative pursuits

There are two commute drawings that I haven’t shared here yet. Some water colour buildings (and a little bit of white acrylic pen) and an imaginary polaroid.

But then I sort of stopped making them. A couple of times because the train was really full or I was really tired because I’ve been very busy at work. But lately also because I’ve started focusing on a different creative pursuit. Knitting! I occasionally love knitting and crocheting, it’s a very calming activitiy to make something stitch by stitch. To be able to figure out a pattern after reading it ten times and to actually make a usefull or cute thing.

I had gotten this awesome yarn a while back in a yarn store in Haarlem, not knowing what I would do with it but loving it enough to just buy it and think of a project later. So I spend a couple of hours browsing Ravelry for a cool pattern to use it for. In the end I settled on this shawl.

This was around the point when it became difficult to keep the entire project on the needles, so I bought a round knitting needle that is large enough for it. I am liking how it is turning out. When it is done I’ll have to wet block it to make the stiches settle well, which I haven’t done very often (I’m lazy) but it does improve the prettiness of finished projects so I will have to start doing it. This morning I discovered that I made a little mistake early on in the project, it’s a small thing and nobody will see it unless they hunt for it, but now I know it’s there and that sucks. It’s too far behind me to undo all my work to fix it however.

In the process of this all I’ve actually started using my ravelry account! I made it a while back but didn’t really do anything with it, but now I’ve added my current and some previous projects and I’m happily shelving a lot of patterns in my library for the future. You can find me here, add me as a friend if you’re active on ravelry too!

In which Eefje comes back from disappearing

So yeah. I was all super active and posting three times a week and then suddenly I stopped. I stopped making and sharing commute drawings. I stopped posting here even though I did have things to share. But I guess I just needed some time for myself, and switching sketchbooks had a much bigger effect than I imagined.

Because I really didn’t like the new sketchbook I got. And it made me sad and not want to draw. I tried it for a couple of drawings, but I was just getting too frustrated with the paper. And for a while I didn’t have time to look for a new sketchbook with different paper so I just… stagnated.

April 14: First commute drawing in my new sketchbook, I definitely have to get used to the paper! I’m not sure I’m happy with it…

April 16: Todays drawing is not an imaginary polaroid. I wanted to try something on a larger scale to see how I like the paper then. Still not a fan. As you can see I’ve been playing Animal Crossing again on my Nintendo 3DS. Yesterday I didn’t do a commute drawing because I was really tired. Sleep is important!

April 17: I figured I’d try an exercise in just watercolour pencils for todays #commutedrawing. Maybe I like the paper better if I don’t use graphite? I don’t, the paper can’t take the water and starts dissolving a bit. 😦 It was not at all like this when I got to test it in the store…

The paper really wasn’t what I need from a sketchbook, I couldn’t work in detail with my graphite pencil and it did not respond well to the water (of which I don’t even use all that much). I hated it. And before I knew it three weeks passed and I lost all drive to keep drawing and to keep posting here. Which is a shame, because I do have photos to share and other stories to tell.

But now I’m getting back on track!

Commute drawing

The last couple of days when I took the train to work instead of staring out the window and zoning out to my music, or reading or checking tumblr, I decided to draw in my sketchbook. I greatly enjoy messing about with pencil and just doing some loose sketching. So now I’m going to sketch on my commute regularly, and keep the zoning out, reading and tumblr for the way back home when I’m tired from working anyway. The music stays on both trips. 🙂

I start by looking around for an idea on what to draw, often that will be someone or something in the train with me, because it’s not about being super creative, but it’s about the simple joy of drawing. It doesn’t really matter whether I’m drawing something interesting or good. But when I do get an idea for something fantastical I am not obligated to make my commute drawing actually relate to being a commuter. So this is my plan! I’ll share the drawings by putting a picture of them on my instagram (like I did for my draw every day challenge for a month last year).

Since I started this in the middle of the week, I don’t have a lot commute drawings to show yet, but here they are!
(In addition to the first one I shared in this post.)
