In which a lot of knitting and other crafty stuff is shown

Here’s a happy little commute drawing, about love for music:

Listening to music makes me happy. #commutedrawing

I have been knitting and crocheting a lot lately. Two of my colleagues recently had babies and I made them something.

I’ve posted in progress pics of this dress on my instagram, but I never uploaded the finished work anywhere but my ravelry account. At work whenever someone procreates, we all give some gifts that one or two people will bring over. I got a sweet email from the colleague who’s daughter got this dress that she loves it and it is exactly the style and coloring she likes. Her daughter will definitely wear it when she’s big enough (it’s a little too big for newborns).

The other colleague also had a daughter, but their gift-basket hasn’t been brought round yet. I made a little vest, but it turned out a bit smaller than I anticipated, and I fear she won’t get to wear it long because babies GROW BIG TIME. But hey, it could always be re purposed as a vest for a large doll. 🙂

The wife of an other colleague is pregnant, so I can move on to the next little being project. But first something for myself!

I’ve started on a top! I’ve been dying to try out Scheepjes Stone Washed yarn ever since I found out it existed, the colours are so amazing! Unfortunately my local yarn shop doesn’t sell any Scheepjes yarn. In the end I found one in a different town that also had a webshop, and this week I finally ordered a shit ton of yarn. I’m not kidding, it was a big box full.

Once I am done with the top which will combine the light blue with a dark one, I will try my hand on a long sleeved warm sweater in the purple and grey colors you see in the picture. Yay for making myself clothing! Of course, I already own so many clothes, that it’s not really necessary. I’ve just cleaned out my closet and got two big bags ready for the clothing swap I and some of my friends will have next week. All the leftovers will be donated.

And finally, I’m also crocheting a new doll. I haven’t gotten far yet, and it’s taken a backseat because of the top, but it’ll be very cute when I’m done with it.

Busy busy summer

You would not believe how busy I have been this summer. How busy I still am. My time is mostly filled with fun and interesting stuff, but it does lead to less blogging then I would have liked. Anywhoo, here’s to more updates again. 🙂

Fun news, my stepbrother is getting married this weekend, and I have dyed my hair again in celebration:

I am very excited for the wedding, so I felt I needed an explosion of colour to signify that. I’m not going to re-bleach my roots, I like that my natural colour is coming out again. I still have more than enough bleached hairs that I can colour and re-colour in all of the pastels and extreme tints.

I made a communte drawing again! In a facebook conversation that turned to who of us would be which avenger I said I was the Hulk, and a friend of mine said someone else had already claimed that role. I responded thusly:

Me: WE CAN HAVE MORE THAN ONE HULK, YOU HULK-BIGOT

Me: ARMY OF HULKS

Me: HULK AND THE HULKETTES

Me: Whoop lost my cool there for a moment.

Sometimes I do things just to amuse myself. I think I myself laughed the hardest. In the train I then drew this:

Eefje-Hulk! I still need to learn how to do patterned clothing better, so that’s a thing I want to improve. I enjoyed drawing in the train again. I’ve lately been knitting and crocheting and sometimes reading, and my commute is not endless. (Thank God.)
But I will start drawing again now.

I’m also thinking about resurrecting the I found a bookmark project, since I did really enjoy it even though I was sad all the bookmarks went missing and that I didn’t get much response. I’m thinking of changing the workflow a little though. I have such a large to read pile at home that adding library books to that would not be smart. So I will just check which of the books I’m going to read are also in the library and put the bookmark in there. And perhaps start with making a couple of bookmarks for books I’ve recently read, so that I can start with a bang and not have the readers of the blog (few though they might be) having to wait ages between posts.

In which I reveal the poster for the End of Summer Nerdfighter Gathering

Poster

Tadaa! The poster I designed and illustrated for the End of Summer Gathering this August. What is this gathering you say? It’s a large Nerdfighter gathering that happens in summer in Utrecht, we’ve held it twice before and this will be the third one. The group of people showing up is so large that we can’t just walk around the city centre and hang out in a public park anymore, so for this edition my friend Roland who organizes the thing reserved a venue. Of course venues cost money, so people will have to buy tickets. To make it extra appealing I’ve designed this poster, so if you pay more you get this snazzy thing to remember it by and to put on your wall. We plan on making it a fun event with lots of interesting things to do (we’re thinking about maybe doing a small scavenger hunt for those who want to participate, similar to the one in Arnhem earlier this year) and people can bring games and play them and make music (there is bound to be someone with a ukelele).

I think you need to be a member of the Dutch and Belgium Facebook group (see here) to be able to see/join the event page, but check it out if you are curious!

I’ve used illustrator for the illustrations and indesign to put everything together. I don’t use illustrator as often as I would like, and I had some frustrating moments in which I had to get used to how the pen tool is slightly different in it than it is in photoshop (where I use it a lot for cut outs), but I am very happy with what I’ve been able to do. I hope you like the poster as much as I do. 🙂

In which we discuss my current creative pursuits

There are two commute drawings that I haven’t shared here yet. Some water colour buildings (and a little bit of white acrylic pen) and an imaginary polaroid.

But then I sort of stopped making them. A couple of times because the train was really full or I was really tired because I’ve been very busy at work. But lately also because I’ve started focusing on a different creative pursuit. Knitting! I occasionally love knitting and crocheting, it’s a very calming activitiy to make something stitch by stitch. To be able to figure out a pattern after reading it ten times and to actually make a usefull or cute thing.

I had gotten this awesome yarn a while back in a yarn store in Haarlem, not knowing what I would do with it but loving it enough to just buy it and think of a project later. So I spend a couple of hours browsing Ravelry for a cool pattern to use it for. In the end I settled on this shawl.

This was around the point when it became difficult to keep the entire project on the needles, so I bought a round knitting needle that is large enough for it. I am liking how it is turning out. When it is done I’ll have to wet block it to make the stiches settle well, which I haven’t done very often (I’m lazy) but it does improve the prettiness of finished projects so I will have to start doing it. This morning I discovered that I made a little mistake early on in the project, it’s a small thing and nobody will see it unless they hunt for it, but now I know it’s there and that sucks. It’s too far behind me to undo all my work to fix it however.

In the process of this all I’ve actually started using my ravelry account! I made it a while back but didn’t really do anything with it, but now I’ve added my current and some previous projects and I’m happily shelving a lot of patterns in my library for the future. You can find me here, add me as a friend if you’re active on ravelry too!
