In which I reveal the poster for the End of Summer Nerdfighter Gathering

Poster

Tadaa! The poster I designed and illustrated for the End of Summer Gathering this August. What is this gathering you say? It’s a large Nerdfighter gathering that happens in summer in Utrecht, we’ve held it twice before and this will be the third one. The group of people showing up is so large that we can’t just walk around the city centre and hang out in a public park anymore, so for this edition my friend Roland who organizes the thing reserved a venue. Of course venues cost money, so people will have to buy tickets. To make it extra appealing I’ve designed this poster, so if you pay more you get this snazzy thing to remember it by and to put on your wall. We plan on making it a fun event with lots of interesting things to do (we’re thinking about maybe doing a small scavenger hunt for those who want to participate, similar to the one in Arnhem earlier this year) and people can bring games and play them and make music (there is bound to be someone with a ukelele).

I think you need to be a member of the Dutch and Belgium Facebook group (see here) to be able to see/join the event page, but check it out if you are curious!

I’ve used illustrator for the illustrations and indesign to put everything together. I don’t use illustrator as often as I would like, and I had some frustrating moments in which I had to get used to how the pen tool is slightly different in it than it is in photoshop (where I use it a lot for cut outs), but I am very happy with what I’ve been able to do. I hope you like the poster as much as I do. 🙂

Spice Puff Girls

Well, not really. But look at our album cover!

Last saturday I went to a nerfighter scavenger hunt gathering in Arnhem. It was lovely weather and a lot of fun to go through the park, station and city centre to try and find all the locations we were hunting for. My team consisted of four girls and we meshed wonderfully. I am still working on selecting and editing my photos of the day, but I wanted to share this bit of fun I was having with photoshop.

One of the places we needed to find was the pedestal of this statue of Hendrik Antoon Lorentz. Cindy took the picture with the rest of us posing. When she posted her photos to facebook, we were all commenting on how fierce we looked and how we’re totally a punk rock band and this is our first album cover. But Cindy herself wasn’t in the photo! So I photoshopped her in and since I was doing that anyway, I thought I’d make it look like an actual album cover. We’re the Spice Puff Girls! (Because there are three Power Puff Girls and five Spice Girls, and four of us.)

I love making silly jokes with awesome people, both in person and online.

Bonus Ben as a Spice Puff Girl (because everyone wants to be a Spice Puff Girl, which is totally what we call our fans as well).

The digital photos I took in and around the Rijksmuseum during our Nerdfighter Museum Gathering! I’ve finally switched to shooting raw. I know, I am so late to this party. I tried shooting raw years ago, but the version of photoshop I had then couldn’t recognize the files from my camera, and the software that came with the camera was excruciatingly slow on the computer I had then. So I kept shooting jpeg and built my workflow around that. Fastforward to now, when I suddenly realise that I’ve had my new computer with a much newer version of photoshop for a while now, so why not switch to shooting raw? I’m still adjusting my workflow, but I am enjoying the imense control I have over the files post shooting. 😀
