In which I reveal the poster for the End of Summer Nerdfighter Gathering

Poster

Tadaa! The poster I designed and illustrated for the End of Summer Gathering this August. What is this gathering you say? It’s a large Nerdfighter gathering that happens in summer in Utrecht, we’ve held it twice before and this will be the third one. The group of people showing up is so large that we can’t just walk around the city centre and hang out in a public park anymore, so for this edition my friend Roland who organizes the thing reserved a venue. Of course venues cost money, so people will have to buy tickets. To make it extra appealing I’ve designed this poster, so if you pay more you get this snazzy thing to remember it by and to put on your wall. We plan on making it a fun event with lots of interesting things to do (we’re thinking about maybe doing a small scavenger hunt for those who want to participate, similar to the one in Arnhem earlier this year) and people can bring games and play them and make music (there is bound to be someone with a ukelele).

I think you need to be a member of the Dutch and Belgium Facebook group (see here) to be able to see/join the event page, but check it out if you are curious!

I’ve used illustrator for the illustrations and indesign to put everything together. I don’t use illustrator as often as I would like, and I had some frustrating moments in which I had to get used to how the pen tool is slightly different in it than it is in photoshop (where I use it a lot for cut outs), but I am very happy with what I’ve been able to do. I hope you like the poster as much as I do. 🙂

Last weeks commute drawings

There is no commute drawing for last sunday because I had a day off to celebrate my grandma’s 86th birthday.

Monday: A pretty dress imaginary polaroid. Inspired by the beautiful dress @ssuuuss had on for her brothers wedding, as seen on her instagram. 🙂

Tuesday: I did not finish tuesdays drawing during my commute, so I posted a work in progress and completed her on the way back home. I love dance.

Wednesday: If you’re wondering if I made a commute drawing today, I sort of did. I was practicing working in Paper on my iPad with my new sensu brush. But I didn’t have enough time (for the majority of my commute I was still eating breakfast) to make anything I want to share. Maybe later!
I got a new sensu brush after losing the one I had somewhere. Fortunately there are several Dutch webshops that offer them now so I don’t have to order from the US and pay an absurd amount of shipping costs (fuck you ThinkGeek) and extra tax costs (Ugh) like with my last one. I’ve now finished the drawing I made, but I don’t think it’s all that good. Still, showing my progress is a good thing! And playing around with different ways of drawing in Paper and seeing how I can best use that app is interesting.

A practice drawing with my new sensu brush (I lost the old one). I'm trying out different ways of drawing in Paper by 53 on my iPad. I see a lot of problems with this drawing, but I did enjoy making it!

Thursday: It took me a while to settle on a subject. Lots of ideas, but none felt like something I wanted to draw. Until I figured I could combine a hunan form with a tree. Presto: Dryad!

The analog pictures

The photos I took with my Olympus Trip camera during the international nerdfighter gathering in Maastricht! It is the first time that I used this film, Ilford HP5 400, a black an white film that is generally loved among lomographers because it produces high contrast photos. Of course, it was a terribly grey day, weather Dutch people will recognize with the heavy clouds covering the entire sky flattening out the light.

Kjeld surrounded by dead people

Kjeld surrounded by dead people! Inside there was too little light according to the light meter of my camera, but I forced it to take a picture anyway. 🙂 We played a Detective game with the entire group, Kjeld had to figure out who the murderer was before everyone died. My last words were, “If I die it’s gonna be your fault”.

Sjoerd clueing for looks

Sjoerd had a little more luck while clueing for looks.

City hall

Out on a walk in Maastricht, I took a picture of the City Hall and we also ran into a bunch of ducks.

Ducks

Swan

Sometimes when shooting with my analog cameras like the Olympus Trip, I forget that the viewfinder doesn’t show the focus. So when the swan came closer I forgot to adjust it. Oops.

Tree

In the window

First I snapped some shots of things in my neighbourhood, like this blossom tree and the display window of an optician.
But the rest of the film roll is taken up with photos from the Nerdfighter Gathering in Antwerp that I went to. Originally it was a film roll of 24 frames, but for some reason at the lab I got it developed they cut off the roll halfway in frame 17. So whatever was behind that is lost to me, which sucks. It was my first time with this film, Agfaphoto vista 400, and I think I like the results I had with the lomography film in this camera better. Still, there are some nice photos. 🙂
